The Krishi Vigyan Kendra Cachar is an innovative science based institution situated in Arunachal, which is 7 kms away from the district headquarter Silchar. The center erstwhile an Upgraded Gram Sevak Training Centre(UGSTC) which was establised way back in 1959 under the Government of Assam, was handed over to Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat in the year 1973. In the year 1995, it was converted to Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Cachar. The Kendra is well connected by road, rail and air. The nearest railway station, Arunachal is 500 metres away from the KVK office. The nearest Airport is Kumbhirgram which is 35 kms away from KVK. The KVK is about 325 kms away from the state capital by road.
The mandate of KVK is Technology Assessment and Demonstration for its Application and Capacity Development (TADA-CD).
To accomplish the mandates, the following activies are conducted-
The KVK is regularly imparting need based training programs in agriculture and allied fields for farmers, farm women and rural youth. There are two types of training programs- off campus and on campus training programmes for which training topics, dates and durations are fixed by the Kendra as per need of the farming community of the district. The second type is sponsored on campus, training programmes which is organised to meet the specific demands from individual farmer, farmers' groups, voluntary organisations, developmental departments etc. and sponsored by external agencies. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra always tries to provide knowledge, develop skill and change in attitude of the participated farmers or rural youth toward specific aspects/technology through training programs. The training programmes are generally conducted in the disciplines like Horticulture, Agronomy, Soil Science, Fisheries Science, Animal Science, Plant Protection and Community Science.
Organizing Front Line Demonstrations on proven technologies in Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science, Plant Protection, Fisheries Science, Animal Sciences and Community Science under farmers' field conditions to generate production data and feedback information in one of the mandates of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Under Front Line Demonstration, different proven technologies like practice, suitable varieties of crops developed by research station and Assam Agricultural University are demonstrating in wider areas of the districts.
On Farm Testing programs aim at testing the new technologies developed at research centres in the fields of crops, horticulture, animal husbandry and fisheries to ensure their suitability and sustainability to specific locations and to suggest or modify or refine the technology in real farm situations with the active participation of farmers.
Farmers are encouraged to visit the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in person to discuss and solve their specific field problems and get hands-on knowledge on the latest technologies available in agriculture and allied fields. Farmers also visit the Kendra time to time to collect paddy seeds of different varieties and other planting materials of good quality for their farm. Moreover, the Kendra also provide necessary guidance and assistance to rural youth, NGOs, groups in agriculture and allied sector.
Under this programme, seeds of paddy and pulses are produced in a larger area upto 100 ha. of land in farmers' field under close supervision of scientists of the KVK.
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra organizes study tours for farmers to various research centres and fields of progressive farmers for 'seeing and studying.'
The KVK has a small nursery where seedlings of different crops are developed under intensive care. The Kendra produces and sells quality planting materials of spices, black peppers, fruits and plantation crops. Every year the KVK produces quality seeds of different improved rice variety like Ranjit, Ranjit sub-1, Swarna sub-1, Bahadur sub-1, TTB404, Aghoni Bora(sticky rice) etc. and make them available for the farming community of the district. Moreover some of the improved breed of duck Khaki chambel, Indian runner etc. has been introduced to the landless labours and otherbackyard poultry and duck rearers of the district.
